Lunch Changes at BMS
By Savannah Attlesperger
At the beginning of the third quarter, Belleville Mennonite School will be changing the lunch schedule due to finances. Instead of four different lunch periods, the lunch periods will be condensed into three. Kindergarten through 2nd grade will continue to eat together, sixth grade will now eat with 3rd, 4th, and 5th grade, and 7th through 12th will eat together.
The majority of the students weren’t very happy with the news at first, but this will be better than the alternative. The alternative will be to dramatically raise the prices of the lunches which, with the gas prices already high, will hardly be affordable for some parents. Lunch prices will raise only a nickel and the food workers leave early will help reduce the costs by reducing their salaries.
Most students have a good attitude about this change. Most of the problems aren’t in eating with a different group but in the schedule change. Some don’t like the idea of having one more period after lunch, while others like the idea of having lunch sooner.
The lunch ladies, however, have kept a good attitude. Superintendent, Mrs. Kanagy, said, “The lunch ladies were very cooperative and positive about this.” So thanks to their good attitude, the lunch ladies have provided a cheaper route for the Belleville Mennonite families for relieving the cafeteria of their expenses.
After some thinking about this and getting used to, all students, staff and parents will probably be very thankful for this new arrangement. “I appreciate the school atmosphere during changes like this because they’re willing to listen and are very cooperative,” stated Mrs. Kanagy.
In agreement, ninth grade student Michelle Zook, said, “I like the family- like environment we have here at B.M.S.” As in all families, Belleville Mennonite School is willing to try this new arrangement with a positive attitude.
