Pennsylvanian History brought to Life at BMS
By: Savannah Attlesperger
On Friday, March 7 BMS held its annual Living History Museum. The eighth graders each portrayed a person from Pennsylvanian History. Visitors came to learn more about our state’s history’s figures.
BMS students were allowed to interview the eighth graders and learn some Pennsylvanian history during school. Some teachers assigned projects to the students based on the interviews they had with the eighth graders. This made this experience a part of class but still allowed them to have fun.
The students learned of the many people in our state’s history this year. These characters included Stephanie Louise Kwolek, Rachel Carson, and many others. These people made history by writing books, inventing, putting forth great ideas, or being the first to achieve something great.
The students learned that not just the “important” people can become well-known but that the “ordinary” people can also achieve greatly. One of these “ordinary” persons was Rachel Carson (portrayed by Hannah Peachey) who had to quit college due to financial struggles. Carson eventually went on to study marine organisms and write many books. She achieved greatly though she was a poor, “ordinary” person.
The Living History Museum was all around a fun, educational, activity. The students all learned about the many important people in our state’s history. “I learned about a lot of stuff that I didn’t know about like Betsy Ross and how the flag was made.” stated Anna Yoder. Hopefully this Living History Museum wasn’t just fun and educational, but also inspiring to the many already high-achieving students here at BMS.
